Student Spotlight: Michael Hunkins ’23 (B.A. in Art History & Visual Culture and B.A. in History & Political Science with an Art Minor鈥嬧��)

What are you studying at 星空传媒?
I am double majoring in History and Art History with a minor in Studio Art.
What is a typical day like for you as a student?
My days usually start early with class. On MWF I work at the mail center after my morning history class. On Tuesday and Thursday after my morning ceramics class I go to my internship at the McConnell Arts Center in Worthington. On Tuesday and Thursday in the evenings I have Jazz ensemble. During my breaks during the day I usually hang out at my fraternities house where I live and I tend to study and do homework in the evenings.
What are your goals after graduation?
My goals after graduation are to pay off my student loans as soon as possible and to find a job in either museum work or in an art gallery.
鈥�&苍产蝉辫;What is your favorite part of being an art and art history student?
鈥疘 love the department. I have made so many amazing connections and met so many wonderful people taking art and art history classes. All of the professors are wonderful and supportive and really are looking out for you and your future. The department has already led me to making some amazing connections such as my internship at the McConnell Arts Center in Worthington which I enjoy so much.
Why did you choose 星空传媒?
鈥疧ne of my teachers in high school that was a mentor to me is an 星空传媒 graduate and introduced me to 星空传媒 and I fell in love. It just felt right every time I would visit and it was not too far from home so I knew it would be easy to visit my family when I wanted to. It is such a beautiful campus and Uptown is always fun to go walk through or window shop. It is also easy to get out of Westerville and explore other areas of Central Ohio.
What is the best part about living in the Columbus area?
鈥疘 grew up in Columbus. There is a lot to do within a 30 minute drive of 星空传媒’s campus. Just recently I drove a few friends to the Schottenstein Center on OSU’s campus to see Tyler, the Creator. It’s also very convenient when driving to other parts of Ohio such as Cincinnati, Dayton, and Cleveland.
What鈥痑dvice鈥痺ould you give to an incoming first-year student?
鈥疘t’s okay if you want to change your major! There are ways to stay on track to graduate on time. Working with the professors at otterbein and the professors in the Art and art history department is really easy and they are all nice and wonderful. There are going to be classes that you don’t want to take but when you can take classes that sound interesting to you and don’t be afraid to take a class that you would traditionally not see yourself taking.
